My names is Josephine Mukanoheli, a left handed girl who tried to survive in this world designed for right handed people on this day I would love to share this story.
I was born in a small village where traditions ran deep and expectations ran even deeper. From the moment I picked up a pencil with my left hand, I was told it was “wrong” that I had to switch, adjust, conform. But how could I change what felt so natural to me?
At school being a left-handed was seen as a flaw even as a curse, I wasn’t just corrected I was punished. Teachers would hit my hand, yell at me, force the pen into my right hand like it would somehow change who I was.
Chalkboards, scissors, desks, tools everything seemed to be made for someone else. I struggled in silence, often hiding my left hand in school or pretending to be slower, just to avoid the criticism.
I remember the sting not just on my skin, but in my heart. I wasn’t doing anything wrong. I was just trying to learn, to write, to be a child. But I was treated like I was broken.
Still, through pain and shame, I held onto my truth. Quietly, stubbornly, I kept using my left hand when no one was watching. I practiced in the dark. I cried in silence. And I survived.
Now I know: there was never anything wrong with me. The world was just too small to understand me back then. But I’m still here stronger, prouder, and still using with the hand they tried to silence.
Being a left-handed girl in a world not built for me taught me resilience. It taught me to adapt, to innovate, and to stand strong in my difference. I may be from a small village, but I carry big strength in the hand they told me not to use. i now hold a master degree, I cook, I knit, I do crocheting, I drive, I do everything proudly with my left hand so what is your superpower mine is I am a lefty girl!!!!!!
